In Manhattan, local restaurant and shop owners on the Upper East side — many of whom have outposts in Palm Beach — are up in arms with former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s whopping $560 million purchase of 980 Madison Avenue, the former Gagosian Building, at 75th street. They fear its new use as a corporate office for Bloomberg Philanthropies will create a void in tourism and foot traffic along that high-profile corridor of the city, the lifeblood for most of these businesses. The landmarked building has served a centerpiece of the New York art scene for over three decades.
