The beloved compass rose mural at Gardiner’s Corner on Nantucket, which currently adorns the side of the Ralph Lauren boutique. Designed in 1936 by photographer H. Marshall Gardiner, who arrived on Nantucket in 1910, the compass features destinations of personal significance—such as Mackinac Island, Michigan, and Daytona Beach, Florida, where he spent childhood summers—as well as notable ports from the island’s whaling past. In 2006, Ralph Lauren partnered with the Nantucket Historical Association to restore the mural, allowing it to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for decades to come.
