Every September, the Great White North turns its attention to the silver screen. Currently, the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival is well under way, with a number of award contenders making their splashy debuts. Here are five films that have everyone talking (so far).
NIGHTBITCH
The title of this film sent social media into a frenzy when it was first announced. So did a basic summary of the plot: Amy Adams, a woman struggling under the pressure and isolation of motherhood, begins turning into a dog on her nightly runs. Early reviews predict that this dark, sometimes graphic comedy may be divisive during awards season.
SATURDAY NIGHT
Just in time for Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary comes Jason Reitman’s ode to where it all began. Saturday Night, described as a “thriller-comedy,” takes place on the eve of the legendary sketch show’s first episode—specifically, 90 minutes before the cameras start rolling.
EDEN
In the latest from Ron Howard, Jude Law and Vanessa Kirby star as two intellectuals who flee Germany in 1929 for what they think is an uninhabited island in the Galápagos. Unfortunately, they’re soon joined by another group of settlers, including Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Bruehl, and Ana de Armas. Can they withstand the elements—and each other?

WE LIVE IN TIME
In this romance for the ages, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield depict a couple in three distinct points of their relationship: the beginning, middle, and what could be the end. Get ready to shed a tear or two.
THE ASSESSMENT
In the future, the government controls who is allowed to have children. Before a young couple—played by Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel—are granted permission, they must first pass the judgment of an assessor, played by Alicia Vikander. Over the course of seven days, the questioning becomes more invasive and intense in this incredibly timely tale.
