Dom Pérignon has an iconic bottle design. But that doesn’t mean the label doesn’t enjoy mixing things up every now and again. After past collaborations with artists like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, and celebrities like Lady Gaga, the champagne brand has announced its latest partnership: the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The special-edition of Vintage 2015 pays tribute to the late artist with an interpretation of his 1983 work, In Italian. The painting, like much of Basquiat’s oeuvre, features a collection of symbols, colors, and words, all arranged in an energetic manner that draws from the artist’s background in graffiti. Among the phrases woven throughout the work is “sangue,” the Italian word for “blood,” which has been crossed out and replaced with “sangre,” its Spanish counterpart. Different sections of the painting are depicted across three coffrets. Together, they produce the painting in its entirety.
Meanwhile, Dom Pérignon is also releasing an “uberspecial” edition of the collaboration, featuring bespoke designs. This version will be for collectors only, with a mere eight pieces available worldwide. The partnership was celebrated in New York on October 10th with a party at the Brant Foundation (owner Peter Brant is one of Basquiat’s top collectors). Guests were able to view In Italian, as well as photographs of 1980s New York through an installation of the work of photographer Maripol. Click through the gallery below to see more from the night.
