Over the past week, charitable organizations have mobilized to help those affected by Hurricane Helene, and are working hard to lessen the impact of Hurricane Milton. Both the American Red Cross and the Palm Beach United Way are aiding Floridians affected by the storm to ensure safe access to food, water, and shelter.
Many dogs and cats are also desperately in need of homes as local animal shelters evacuate. The Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is working urgently to organize places for them to stay. “Sue Berry, our CEO, is doing an excellent job,” board chairman Pauline Pitt tells PALMER. “Clewiston Animal Services has asked for help as their kennels are outside and we are taking 21 dogs. We are taking a further 14 dogs to PBI to board them in Panama City Beach. We are helping Saint Francis Animal Rescue of Venice, Florida, located one mile from the Gulf Coast, to evacuate cats to enter our program.”
Founded in 1924 on the porch of Amy Lyman Philips’s Palm Beach home, the shelter—which was built for animals left behind by winter visitors returning north—was destroyed in the hurricane of 1928. It has since been rebuilt by volunteers and donated funds. Today, the organization has helped over 35,000 cats and dogs, providing shelter to lost, homeless, and unwanted animals. It also provides them with spaying and neutering services, advocates for animal welfare, and educates new owners.

Elsewhere, the Tri County Animal Rescue is helping dogs and cats along the east coast, from Florida to North Carolina. “We are there for any organization or individuals who need medical help or sheltering for their animals,” says Suzie Goldsmith, founder and executive director. The organization will host its Peppermint Bark and Brunch in West Palm Beach on November 25th.
