PALMER Vol. 7 is coming out March 10th. Below, Editorial Director Stefano Tonchi gives a preview of what to expect.

Living in Palm Beach can very often remind one of life in a movie. And, in reality, many residents of this unique place have been the subjects of films and books. The lives of these special people, born incredibly privileged or self-made, secretly philanthropic or overtly decadent, brings to mind the lead character played by Rock Hudson in the film Magnificent Obsession.

For our latest issue of PALMER, available online and in-store, we wanted to celebrate small and grand obsessions. We looked into the public and private passions of our Palm Beach neighbors and took notes on what they love and what they collect—in their homes, among their gardens, on their walls, by their docks and in their garages.

Mega-yachts and fast cars have been the big-boy toys for generations, and Palm Beach’s über collectors are no exception. Martin Gruss opened the doors of his garage and took artist Anastasia Samoylova for a ride in some of his most precious possessions.

Some of the most important art collectors in the world have at least one of their residences in Palm Beach. That’s one of the reasons gallerist and art legend Tony Shafrazi has been gallivanting around town, looking for a place to set down roots, not too far from his best friend and major collector Peter Brant, shot exclusively for PALMER by legendary photographer Harry Benson. Each room of the newly restored and beautifully decorated residence of Peter Brant and Stephanie Seymour—Tony officiated their 1995 wedding in Azzedine Alaïa’s Paris studio—has paintings and objects that the dealer helped to acquire and could narrate in detail.

Hilary Geary Ross and Wilbur Ross fell in love with René Magritte in 2007, and have not stopped collecting his work since. Today, they own one of the largest private collections in the world, that they proudly display in their waterfront John Volk home.

Passions do not only come in tycoon-worthy sizes; as you will see in our portfolio photographed by Tommy Kha, collecting tiny jewelry and precious accessories can carry major emotional value. Preserving the species of plants and animals that we cherish is the ultimate act of love. We celebrate a handful of activists in Southern Florida who are dedicating their lives to preservation, education, and sustainability. While their work is varied, their goal is the same: To maintain the delicate balance that makes Palm Beach a fertile playground for limitless species of native plants, birds, turtles and, yes, billionaires, too.
