There comes a point when, for many New Yorkers, the hustle and bustle of the city becomes a little too much. New York is one of the great cities of the world, of course. But it is also an intense place to live, with endless concrete, noise, and crowds. So, every summer, its most well-to-do inhabitants escape to the Hamptons in search of open spaces, beautiful beaches, and a little peace and quiet.
A similar pattern has emerged in Palm Beach during the winter. At first glance it seems unnecessary. Palm Beach already has the beach, the sunshine, and none of New York’s less appealing traits. But if you winter on the island, you quickly realize that Palm Beach has its own kind of intensity, fueled by a busy social calendar.
So, Palm Beachers do what New Yorkers have been doing for decades. They escape. Their Hamptons just happen to be the Bahamas.
Only about a 45-minute flight from South Florida, the islands offer a perfect reset. With its turquoise water and white powdery sand, the Bahamas have a way of slowing everything down. The growing flow of travelers has not gone unnoticed by private airlines. Tradewind Aviation, known for its boutique private flying experience, has recently announced expanded Bahamas routes as demand from Palm Beach and South Florida travelers continues to grow. “Palm Beach and the Bahamas have always had a natural connection,” says Tradewind CEO Eric Zipkin. “What we are seeing now is a growing number of travelers who want to get there quickly, comfortably, and without the hassle of traditional commercial flying.”
The Bahamas themselves have changed as well. Over the past decade, the islands have modernized quickly. New luxury resorts, ambitious residential developments, and restaurants led by internationally recognized chefs are reshaping the islands into one of the most compelling destinations for the ultra-wealthy.
One of the most talked-about new residential developments in the Bahamas is the The Ocean Club Four Seasons Residences on Paradise Island, expected to be completed in 2028. Set beside the celebrated Ocean Club Four Seasons resort, the residences will combine private ownership with the services and amenities of a five-star hotel. Ocean views, concierge service, and access to one of the Caribbean’s most storied beachfront properties promise an effortless transition for Palm Beach residents.
Nearby, Rosewood Baha Mar has become another anchor of the islands’ evolving luxury scene. The resort blends Bahamian architecture with refined hospitality, offering pristine beaches, acclaimed dining, and access to the larger Baha Mar resort campus. For many Palm Beach visitors, it has become a favorite place to unwind for a few days between the demands of the season.
And then there is the ultimate escape. Montage Cay, a private island resort and residential community in the Abacos conceived by legendary developer and former Palm Beach resident David Kosoy, takes the idea even further.
“We are creating a place where you can experience extraordinary privacy and natural beauty without sacrificing the comforts people expect today,” Kosoy told PALMER in a recent interview. The island is designed around that idea. Boats pull directly up to the homes, kitchens can be stocked before arrival, and with seven beaches to choose from, there is always another stretch of sand waiting on the other side of the island.
It is no wonder that the Bahamas continues to grow in popularity. For Palm Beachers, the appeal is easy to understand. After all, one of the greatest modern-day luxuries is getting a chance to disconnect for a few days. For many, the Bahamas have become a winter version of the Hamptons, just further south, and a little easier to disappear in.
