I’ve always believed that if you want something done right, you’re better off doing it yourself. Early on in my marriage, I decided (purely in the interest of its long-term success) to take matters into my own hands when it came to the gifts my husband was meant to give me, birthdays and anniversaries included.

Mother’s Day, however, is a slightly different equation. Now that I’m a mom myself, I do feel for the husbands and sons of the world. The brief is, frankly, impossible. There is no gift quite significant enough to capture what a mother deserves. Which leaves me, at least, in two minds: part of me hopes to be completely surprised, the other is tempted to quietly handle it myself (with his credit card, of course) and avoid the risk altogether.

So consider this a solution. If you’re a mother reading this, feel entirely justified in choosing something for yourself. Permission granted. If you’re shopping on her behalf, this edit should keep you firmly in her good graces. I say that with confidence, as I do know a thing or two about high standards.
